WHAT IS SKI CROSS?

Think BMX on skis. Competitors complete a course filled with rollers, big air jumps, corner jumps, compressions, gates, berms and other features/terrain, all at a speed averaging 60-80km/hr. Each competitor completes an individual time trial against the clock. Then the top 32 competitors move into the finals and are arranged into 8 heats of 4 competitors. When the starting board drops, the 4 competitors pull out of the gate and complete the course simultaneously. The first 2 to cross the finish line in each heat advance to the next round until there are 4 competitors going for gold in the ‘big final’. A ‘small final’ is also run to establish positions 5th – 8th. There is a lot of tight passing and high-speed crashes, making it particularly appealing to spectators!

After a devastating error in the 2010 Olympics, Sarah had aspirations to compete in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. However, after the diagnosis of 3 ruptured ligaments in her right ankle after crashing in the 2011 Alpe d'Huez World Cup, Sarah officially retired from professional skiing in late February 2011.
